The Houston Astros clinched their first playoff berth with 11-0 victory over Nationals in the inaugural season of the DBL. Star LF Yoenis Cespedes summarized the season: "It was a wild ride, we were crippled by key injuries for much of April and May, so bad that we were swimming in 12- and 13th place for a month,, and then had a fairly mediocre June. Truthfully, I wrote us off...then we put together a few wins and started getting some help down the stretch. We needed a big week agains a team that was fighting to get in, and we delivered. It wasn't pretty but we'll take it."
GM Tim Purpura offered insight to his strategy: "In some pools you maximize roster transactions to manipulate games played, for us, we weren't prepared to let go most of our guys for short term gain, so we rode it out. Was it the right call? I have no idea, I've never been a baseball GM, but, it seemed to work better than the methods of 7 other teams."
The Astros turn their focus to the mighty Blue Jays, Kris Bryant offered how the team might fare. "You know, we're playing the BJ's, and the BJ's are a great club, they play hard and like to go deep, long They're full of juice and ready to explode. We respect the BJs, hell we love the BJs, but we've got to play our game. After 21 weeks they managed only 14 more wins than us, that's less than 1 win a week. We gotta keep telling ourselves this isn't a David vs Goliath matchup, and that anything is possible."
Astros GM Purpura extended his congratulations to the other teams in the playoffs, and the entire DBL for an interesting inaugural season.
